Google AdWords is the former name of Google’s paid advertising platform. On July 24, 2018, however, Google re-branded its advertising platform to Google Ads. For the sake of simplicity, we will still use Google AdWords interchangeably with Google Ads. We will discuss why Google changed the name later in this blog. What is AdWords?

Google Ads (formerly Google AdWords and Google AdWords Express) is an online advertising solution that businesses use to promote their products and services on Google Search, YouTube, and other sites across the web. Google Ads also allows advertisers to choose specific goals for their ads, like driving phone calls or website visits. With a Google Ads account, advertisers can customize their budgets and targeting, and start or stop their ads at any time.”

Google

Put simply it is Google’s platform for pay per click ads.

How does Google AdWords work?

Pay-per-Click SEO - EWR Digital

Google AdWords is set up like an auction. You bid on keywords or phrases that are used to match your ads with the terms people are searching for. Google will display your ads when people are searching for relevant keywords.

For example, perhaps you sell shoes in Denver, Colorado and set up PPC ads for women’s boots. When people search “women’s boots Denver” your PPC ads (if optimized correctly) will show up!

Google has 2 primary ways you can choose to display your ad:

1) Through the Google Search Network – These are the ads you see when you make a search. They can appear before the organic search terms or below. If your ad is highly relevant, people are likely to click on it if they are in a rush or looking for a deal.

2) Through the Google Display Network. – Also known as Banner Ads. These are ads you see on websites you visit, display on your Gmail, and YouTube videos.  These ads are great for remarketing to clients who have previously visited your website.

To get the most out of your ad, you’re going to want to make sure your ads are in front of the right audience. Google created a keyword planner tool to help when doing keyword research. If you would like to learn more about keyword research for your business give us a call at 713-597-2656.

How Much Does Google AdWords cost?

Cash - EWR Digital

A Google AdWords account is free to set up. To have your ads run you will have to bid on the keywords you want to target. Google follows the CPC (cost per click) bidding model for most of its ad services.

This means you tell Google the maximum amount you are willing to spend per click and you compete against other bidders for that same keyword. For example, if your ad budget is $20 and each click is $10, your ad budget will buy you 2 clicks.

Why Did Google Change From Google AdWords to Google Ads?

Sridhar Ramaswamy, VP of Ads & Commerce, told Search Engine Land in a recent interview:

“With Google Ads as opposed to Google AdWords, it is moving the imperceptible default opinion that you get as an advertiser when you hear ‘Google AdWords’ … you think, ‘Oh, Words. Search.’ …in our opinion, is a much more straightforward representation of what Google advertising can provide.”
