Social media marketing is extremely important when building your brand and marketing online. The biggest players in the social media world tend to be:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google Plus
  • LinkedIn
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • YouTube

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social media networking site created by Jack Dorsey, a board member of the Odeo podcasting company. Users post messages, called “tweets,” and can reply to, share, and “re-tweet” messages (which basically means re-sharing someone else’s tweet).

Tweets were originally not allowed to have more than 140 characters, meaning each message was short and sweet; however, the company expanded the character limit to 280 in November 2017.

Founded in 2006, the website grew fast, with over 400,000 tweets posted by 2007. Twitter became the third-highest-ranking social networking website in 2009, and by 2011, users were posting 140 million tweets every day.

Now, Twitter boasts a huge following and user base:

  • 330 million active monthly users
  • 500 million tweets sent per day

There are 64 million users in the United States alone, meaning that Twitter has definitely cemented itself as one of the top social media sites out there.

*Now it’s call, “X” due to Elon Musk changing the name.

Why Should I Use Twitter for Social Media Marketing?

Despite the short character limit, Twitter is a social media powerhouse of information.

From celebrities and politicians, to business executives and journalists, Twitter is the place to go if you want to know what’s going on in the world.

Twitter Trends - EWR Digital

Take a look at the Trending section, which shows what people are tweeting about the most.

Another thing: Twitter users often add something called hashtags at the end of their messages. They look like this:

#EWRDigital #mondaymotivation #pumpkinspice

These hashtags act as, well, tags – things that link similar tweets together using a word, phrase, or name. Clicking on a hashtag will bring you to a page showing you all the tweets that include that specific hashtag, making it easy to see what’s being said on a certain topic.

Use hashtags to your advantage. If you can jump onto a Trending Hashtag, do so! It can increase your visibility and brand awareness.

And note that the more you interact with people on Twitter, the more you’ll improve your brand awareness. Furthermore, it’s just good practice to communicate with your audience, especially if they’re already reaching out to you.

Say you’re a kitchen remodeling contractor. You could get on Twitter and create the hashtag #dreamkitchen along with images of kitchens you have remodeled. (Pair this with some posts on Pinterest and it’ll be even more impactful!)
